COVID-19 and its psychological effects on individuals

While we see a huge outbreak of COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus) we follow recommended guidelines by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) such as Social Distancing, Hand Washing and Home Sheltering. This brings many new problems with it and often times causes breakouts of mental health issues.

As citizens somewhat follow the Social Distancing and Home Sheltering suggestions we notice that Home Sheltering may cause persons to experience similar symptoms to that of mass isolation. Moreover we have to address these issues before they become large scale larger outbreaks.

In Hispanic culture we seem to look down on mental health and critique persons who suffer with them, now because of our culture we may see a larger outbreak of these issues. Often times isolated individuals and persons sheltering once being in this isolation show outbreaks of depression, anxiety and stress related anger.

If people show signs of depression it is not just sadness, some of the major symptoms of depression include:

  • feeling of sadness, emptiness and hopelessness.
  • fits of frustration, angry outbursts or generally irritability
  • loss of interest or pleasure in most or all activities
  • disturbance of sleep patterns
  • lethargy and feelings of tiredness
  • reduced appetite and weight loss
  • feelings of anxiety
  • slowed thinking and loss of focus
  • feeling of worthlessness and guilt
  • trouble concentrating
  • frequent or recurrent thoughts of death
  • frequent pains or other unexplainable physical problems

If you present any of these symptoms please reach out to a mental health professional and develop a necessary mental health rehabilitation plan.

We as humans are social creatures and isolation causes us to often act out. Practice techniques that allow you to unwind, stay active and keep calm during situations of high stress and anxiety.
